AVÍ·µÈ²Õ

The Mackies

Since 1986, the AVÍ·µÈ²Õ Department of Athletics has honored individuals for their outstanding athletic achievements and contributions to the university and its athletic programs through the Athletic Hall of Fame. In 2008, the Hall of Fame was expanded to include Teams of Distinction, recognizing teams that have reached exceptional milestones.

In 2017, the celebration was rebranded as The Mackies, a prestigious event held each spring to honor the accomplishments of both individuals and teams.

  • Terry Smallwood '72 - Basketball

    A standout on the court, Terry Smallwood left an undeniable mark on AVÍ·µÈ²Õ basketball. Wearing #11, he ranks 12th in program history with an impressive 1,493 career points. A KIAC First Team All-Conference selection, Terry played a key role in leading AVÍ·µÈ²Õ to three KIAC Conference Regular Season and Tournament Championships in 1968-69, 1970-71, and 1971-72.

    Terry graduated from AVÍ·µÈ²Õ in 1972 with a degree in accounting and business administration, and his commitment to the University has never wavered. A longtime supporter and dedicated member of our Board of Trustees, Terry continues to invest in the future of AVÍ·µÈ²Õ.

  • Lyla Blauser-Sanders '08, '10 - Softball

    Lyla Blauser-Sanders was a force on the field from 2004 to 2008, setting multiple program records and earning numerous accolades along the way.

    A 2007 NFCA All-East Region and All-Region XII Team Member, Lyla holds season records for games played (58 in 2007) and hit by pitch (12 in 2006). She also holds the single-game record for stolen bases (7) vs. Miami-Hamilton in 2004. Over her career, she cemented herself in AVÍ·µÈ²Õ history, holding the all-time records for stolen bases (112), and hit by pitch (30), and is second inruns scored (156). A two-time All-AAC Team Member, she earned Honorable Mention honors in 2006 before being named First Team All-Conference in 2007.

    Lyla continued her education at AVÍ·µÈ²Õ, earning her undergraduate degree in physical education in 2008 and a master’s in health education in 2010.

  • Patrick O'Neal '08 - Football

    A relentless force on the field, Pat ranks second all-time in career tackles, solidifying his place among the greats of the program.

    His 2007 season remains one of the best in AVÍ·µÈ²Õ history, ranking second on the program’s single-season tackle list, while his 2006 season still holds the 10th spot. Pat’s dominance was recognized on a national level, as he was named:

    * 2nd Team College Fans Sports Network All-American in 2006 and 2007

    * Don Hansen’s Football Gazette NAIA All-American in 2006

    * Victory Sports Network's 2007 NAIA Football All-American Second Team

    Within the Mid-South Conference, he was a three-time First-Team selection and earned Mid-South Conference and NAIA Defensive Player of the Week honors multiple times. His ability to rise to the occasion was never more evident than on September 1, 2007, when he tied the school record with 20 tackles in a single game against Cumberlands.

    Across his four-year career, Pat recorded 168 solo tackles and 222 assisted tackles, for an impressive 390 total tackles.

    Pat graduated from AVÍ·µÈ²Õ in 2008 with a degree in special education.

2025 Teams of Distinction

  • 1968-69 Men's Basketball Team

    The 1968-69 men's basketball team was incredibly successful on the court, finishing with a 22-10 record and capturing both the KIAC regular season and tournament championships—a feat that many members of this team would go on to repeat in the 1970-71 and 1971-72 seasons.

    This squad was led by Paul Andrews, who still holds the title of all-time leading scorer in program history. He wasn’t alone in his dominance—three of his teammates remain among the top 20 all-time scorers in AVÍ·µÈ²Õ history. Inside the paint, Ken Meibers was a force to be reckoned with and still stands as AVÍ·µÈ²Õ’s all-time leading rebounder.

    Guiding this championship-caliber team was Coach Pete Moore, whose impact on AVÍ·µÈ²Õ basketball is undeniable. With a legacy of success, he remains second in all-time coaching wins in program history.

  • 2007 Women's Softball Team

    Coming off a 15-38 season the year before, this group put together a remarkable 38-21 record in 2007, marking the biggest single-season turnaround in program history. Their dominance on the field led them to AVÍ·µÈ²Õ’s first-ever Appalachian Athletic Conference regular season championship, earning them a spot in the NAIA Region XII Tournament.

    The 2007 team set the standard for future Bulldogs, with five players still holding program records and the best win percentage in team history. As a unit, they rewrote the record books, holding team season records in:

    * Batting Average, At-Bats, Runs, Hits, Walks, RBIs, Total Bases, Hit by Pitch

    * Strikeouts, Shutouts, and Lowest ERA

Hall Inc., a corporate athletic sponsor, his generosity has been evident through countless donations and in-kind contributions that have enhanced AVÍ·µÈ²Õ’s athletic programs and facilities.

    Jimbo has played a vital role in facility improvements across campus, often donating materials, labor, or funding for key projects. His contributions include resurfacing the pool starting blocks for swim teams, donating and placing rock landscaping around Soldiers & Sailors, and assisting with the razing and removal of houses and buildings on AVÍ·µÈ²Õ properties—both before and during his tenure as a trustee. In 2019, while AVÍ·µÈ²Õ managed the local golf course, he provided support to improve the facility. His commitment to Bulldog Athletics also extends to directly supporting student-athletes—most notably, by helping fund the 2017 Men's Basketball National Championship rings.
