Dr. DJ Washington officially began his two-year term as Interim President of AVͷȲ (UCU) on June 1. A nationally respected leader in higher education and a 2003 AVͷȲ alum, Washington says this role “means everything” to him.
“I want to give back to AVͷȲ and the Barbourville community in the highest possible way,” he says.
Originally from Cedar Hill, Tennessee, Washington was the first in his family to attend college. He says he came to AVͷȲ to play basketball but “left with so much more.” Washington values the opportunities AVͷȲ gave him to explore new things and find mentors who ultimately helped him discover his purpose.
“Because of my experiences at AVͷȲ, I literally walked off campus knowing what I wanted to do when I graduated, which was be the president of a small college,” he says. In his senior year, as President of the Student Government Association (SGA), he worked closely with President David Joyce and realized what he wanted to do with the rest of his life.
Washington now holds a doctorate degree in higher educational leadership and policy studies from the and a master’s in public relations from . He has served on AVͷȲ’s Board of Trustees since 2019, most recently as Vice Chair, and he’s spent over 20 years working in higher education, all in preparation for one day serving as president of a small college. “I didn’t think in a million years I would have the opportunity to do it at AVͷȲ,” he says.
